Robust lowess
WebApr 16, 2024 · To illustrate the nice aspect of lowess graphs, I show a little example, with all code accessible via the link below. First, I simulate a pandas dataframe with two variables and 100 rows. I use a simple scatter plot, showing below. As we can see, there is a non-linear relationship in the data, making it tricky to estimate the trend in the data. WebRobustFit. RobustFit is a free utility programme for robust locally-weighted scatterplot smoothing (LOWESS), or robustly fitting data to a polynomial function. The image below shows the programme robustly smoothing a set of data points with many large outliers (which extend considerably above the top scale of the graph).

WebApr 1, 2010 · Well lowess is not robust, there is a not too pathological counter example in the lowess examples I believe, and a thread from a couple years ago by Martin Maechler. But also intuitively the procedure you are proposing seems a little dodgy. WebLOWESS is an acronym for Locally Weighted Scatterplot Smoothing, whereby multiple regressions are fitted over different regions of the data domain and then combined based on weightings linked to the distance between the prediction point and the data used to fit each of the local regressions. ... as well as the robust LOWESS proposed by ...
